Confessions of a Professional Organiser (Part 3)

The longer things are left unattended, the more they have a tendency to pile up.  Sounds obvious, I know, however....

Confession Number Three:  I don’t go longer than a few days without reviewing my systems.

Just in case you skipped over it, I’ll say it again:  In reality, the longer things are left unattended, the more they have a tendency to pile up.

PHOTO CONFESSION IIIThis means that even when life seems full to the brim, I still flip through the pile of paperwork in my office, have a quick check on the mail, see what’s in the “Communication Tray” and jot things down on the shopping list.   When life is busy it occurs with less frequency, however more often than not; the systems in place are checked daily.

When life’s a little less hectic however, we use the following system, which is proved to be so effective it takes very little maintenance or time to do.

  • Daily go through “hot spots”, such as paperwork
  • Handle incoming mail as soon as we get it.  Bills need paying? Time permitting, we get on line and do it there and then, file the paperwork and throw the envelope in the recycling bin.  Done and dusted, we don’t have to think about it again.  To take it a step further, in most cases we’ve set up automatic payments of bills, and it’s simplified the process even more.  Alternatively place bill in the “Finance” file for actioning;
  • When we see something that needs to be done, such as stacking the dishwasher, we do it as soon as time permits.  Again done and dusted and we don’t have to think about it again.
  • We make it a habit of keeping the dining room table and kitchen benches cleared, so they don’t become a magnet for more clutter.
